Virtualbox Guest Additions Installation on Windows and Linux

In the previous post-BackBox Installation on VirtualBox, we learned how to install BackBox Linux on Virtualbox. But just installing the OS in virtualox will not fully help, as without guest additions a VM has been never complete. And an incomplete VM will cause lots of problems. That’s why Guest additions are there. We will talk about the Virtualbox guest additions here.

Every VM is incomplete without a guest addition. Using the Guest operating system will let the applications to get better performance and usability. Some features you should know about Guest addition are:

  • Seamless Windows. Ability to change resolution and to use in Fullscreen. (Before you could only use a small portion of the screen, and unable use the applications on the environment.)
  • Improve mouse integration, as before you have noticed that the mouse pointer is not properly integrating with the system, which is causing for navigation problems.
  • A Share folder option comes. With this, you will be able to share files between the host OS and Virtual OS.
  • Better video support with Virtual Box Drivers.
  • Share clipboard option.

Windows OS supported by Virtualbox Guest Additions are:

  • Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 (any service pack)
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 (any service pack)
  • Microsoft Windows XP (any service pack)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (any service pack)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008
  • Microsoft Windows Vista (all editions)
  • Microsoft Windows 7 (all editions)
  • Microsoft Windows 8 (all editions)
  • Microsoft Windows 10 RTM build 10240
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012

Installation of Virtualbox Guest Additions on Windows:

Installation on Windows is very straight and simple. Here I will show how to install it on windows & guest machine. But the process is same for every Windows OS.So there will be no problem if you at least just know to use your particular Windows. Now to install the Virtualbox Guest Additions get to the following steps:

    1. So 1st start your virtual machine as usual and wait for it to start and log in.
    2. After everything gets steady go to option “Devices” on top of VirtualBox menu and then click on “Guest Addition CD Image..”.

    3. Then a device autoplay window will pop up. If it doesn’t happen then you can manually go to “my Computer” and check if any drive is inserted. Virtual Guest Addition will be there in CD Drive option. Just open it and run the “VBoxWindowsAddition.exe” to start the installer.

    4. Now click “Next”. And go through the installation process. After installation is done, Select “Reboot now” and wait for it to reboot.

    5. And you are done. After reboot, you will get all the features of Virtualbox Guest Additions.

Official Linux Distros which are supported are:

  • Oracle Linux as of version 5 including UEK kernels;
  • Fedora as of Fedora Core 4
  • Redhat Enterprise Linux as of version 3
  • SUSE and openSUSE Linux as of version 9
  • Ubuntu as of version 5.10

Installation of Virtualbox Guest Addition in Linux Guest machine:

  1. First, you need to update and upgrade your Linux. To do that simply open terminal as root and enter the following command:
    apt-get updateAfter its done ,do the following:

    apt-get upgrade

  2. After the update is done, you are ready to install Guest addition. So, simply click on Devices>Insert Guest Additions CD image…
  3. Then you will be able to see VBOXADDITIONS CD image on the Desktop.

  4. Now open that CD image and copy “” to Desktop( or anywhere you want, but remember the path).

  5. Now open the terminal as root run the following command:sh

    Note:If you have not opened terminal as root, then use ‘sudo sh [location of]’

  6. After the process is done , Virtualbox Guest Additions are installed. Now restart your VM and see the difference .
